In order to begin my project, I first began with research. After choosing my interested topics for my project, I settled on “Theodore Roosevelt and the Trusts”, which is about how Theodore Roosevelt fought against greedy monopolies during his presidency, and how that affected the monopolies. I was interested in all of the topics, however this one interested me more because of the factor it has in business. I have always been interested in the business area, so I chose this one over the others.
Researching this project was the most difficult task. Secondary documents are simple to search up, however primary sources were a completely different situation. To start off researching the project, I looked up some basic information about Theodore Roosevelt, and the first Anti-Trust act, the Sherman Act. While researching, to gain a more reliable information source, I set the browser settings to only include .gov, .edu, or .org domain websites. This choice limited my options, but ensured the best and most reliable information I could find. Eventually, I got my maximum sources, and some extra ones for multimedia, .pdf files, and more.
I have always been interested in the internet and computers, and therefore spent a lot of time as a youngster exploring the computer. Therefore, when my options came up for my project, I knew which one I would chose. I chose Website out of the total 5 options. Since I have little experience with composing scripts, film editing software, and modular construction, I did not chose Documentary, Performance, or Exhibit. I preferred not to choose Paper because I wanted to try something other than Paper. Therefore, I settled on Website. The website was quite easy to build due to experience learned prior to the project with the Weebly Portal, and I was able to easily create my website. I faced little difficulty with the website builder, and was able to include everything I wanted on the website.
My topic, “Theodore Roosevelt and the Trusts”, or, as stated on the website, “Standing Against Monopolies: Theodore Roosevelt and the Trusts”, relates to the “Taking A Stand” theme because it tells a story about powerful monopolies who, because they bought up competition in the market and were the only consumer option for 1 type of product, set the price to whatever they please. If the item needed was a necessity, then people would have to buy it. No-one was powerful enough to stop this, and the previous presidency did not do anything about the problem until Theodore Roosevelt. He took a stand by fighting against these greedy trusts, and proving that nothing is above the law. He broke down monopolies like Standard Oil, and helped to form 2 critical documents: The Sherman and Clayton Anti-Trust Acts. Theodore Roosevelt took a stand for something previous presidency was too scared to fight against. Therefore, my topic relates to the theme for NHD.
